Midnight Fire

Midnight Fire is one of the worst books I have ever read. It's a bad knock off of twilight without Stephanie Meyer's literary talent. Basically, take Bella and trade her for a red-headed vampire hunter that can shoot the sun out of her hands. The story itself has lots of promise, but the author can't seem to separate her writing style from that of Stephanie Meyer. I would recommend that no one ever read this book. It's not worth your time.

Circle of Sorcerers

The book I read, called Circle of Sorcerers, is the first in a series. The book features a boy who lives in a world where everyone has a little bit of magic inside of them. He just happens to have more than most. He leaves his home to go train with the Sorceress, Ismarelda. He soon learns that he is a very powerful sorcerer. He must use his skills to escape when the Heraldan church, who believe sorcerers are evil, set the building on fire during a meeting of the circle of sorcerers.

Through the Veil

This week I finished the last book so far in the Grey Wolves series called Through the Veil. A massive war is brewing between the wolves and the last witch on earth, Desmonda. Desmonda is gathering allies, but so are the wolves. The wolves try to enlist the help of the extremely powerful Fey, but the Fey are only concerned with the things on their side of the veil. Luna, the goddess of wolves, has a different plan for the Fey. She makes it so the Fey have no choice but to join in the battle. Things seem to be looking up until Desmonda lures the males wolves of the pack into the In-Between, a hellish place that makes you relive your worst nightmares. It's up to Jaque and the other females in the pack to save their men.

That is where the book leaves off. I wanted to throw something. No other book in the series left off on a cliff hanger. This book leaves you dumb-struck and angry. The next book doesn't come out until January which, if you've read the series, seems like an eternity.

Blood Rites

Book two in the Grey Wolves Series is just as good as Prince of Wolves. Jacque and Fane are finally going to be bonded...right? The unthinkable happens when Jacque, Lilly, Jen, and Sally get into a serious accident  one the way to the bonding ceremony. Jacque and Jen are in serious condition. Was this an accident or was it planned?- that is what Fane intends to find out.

The Prince of Wolves

The book I read this week was recommended to me by a friend. It is about a werewolf from Romania, Fane who is a foreign exchange student in a small town where he meets his life mate, Jacque. Jacque knows nothing of werewolves so she is obviously freaked out when she starts hearing Fane's voice in her head, one of the perks of having a life mate. Jacque learns that she is half werewolf although she cannot phase. The wolf in Fane knows that Jacque is the woman who he should spend the rest of his life with.  Fane is like a love sick puppy. He is the most devoted and loving boyfriend one could ever hope for (not to mention he's hot), so it's the perfect teen romance.Trouble comes along when another wolf claims that Jacque is his mate. Fane and this other wolf must battle to the death in order to win Jacque's hand.

The Dead and the Gone is a sequel to Life as We Knew It. The Dead and the Gone, though, is written about a completely different family. Alex, Julie, and Bri live on west 88th street in New York. When the asteroid crashes into the moon, their dad is in Puerto Rico for a funeral, and their mom is working at a hospital in queens. As far as we know, they never see their parents again. Their older brother, Carlos, is in the marines, stationed who knows where, so Alex is the man of the house now. He has to make critical decision to keep him and his sisters alive.

The Help

One of the most amazing books I've ever read! Although written by a white woman who was raised by a black maid, the author really seemed to understand her subject's perspective. Set in the heart of the deep south, Jackson Mississippi, The Help narrates the story of Skeeter, a white plantation owner's daughter, who is writing the story of the black maids she knows. They all take a huge risk, Skeeter but especially the maids. Racists in the town could kill them, burn down their houses, or any number of awful things, if it is found out that they wrote the book.

The book doesn't have a lot of questionable material: some language here and there and much smoking, but the good guys are the good guys, and the bad guys are the bad guys. It is very deep material, so I would recommend this book for anyone over thirteen.

Nevermore:The Final Maximum Ride sounds pretty intense doesn't it? Well, it is. If you haven't read the rest of the series, you aren't missing much, but the final book is by far my favorite in the series. Most of the books are centered on "save the planet" mumbo jumbo with a little action thrown in there to force you to keep reading. I read the last book just to get it over with but was mildly shocked. The book had so much adventure, romance, and intrigue shoved into it, I didn't know what to do with myself! I was riveted until the final page. The ending of the series was completely unexpected, which I always love. It's hard to tell because I've already read it, but you could probably pick up the last book without reading the others and still understand what's going on. Each book has a recap that seems to get shorter as the series goes on, but I think it's enough to give you a good idea. I wouldn't recommend reading the series, but, if you have, I would definitely suggest finishing it.

A very enlightening book about France during its many revolutions

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Life as We Knew It is a really cool post-apocalypse book. Everyone is super excited about the meteor that is going to hit the moon. What no one expects becomes their worst nightmare. The meteor pushes the moon closer to the earth causing tsunamis, earthquakes, and a lot of other disasters in unexpected places.

I think this book fits right in with this generation's apocalypse obsession. It isn't your stereotypical doomsday book. It's written from the point of view of a tight knit family just keeping their heads down until it all blows over, or they die. It makes you realize all the luxuries we never even think about like school, regular mail, and running water. Having lived in Florida during its big hurricane season a few years back, I can relate a little bit to having no electricity and running water, but that only lasted about to weeks. Imagine going indefinitely without news, heating, and contact with people outside your family. It makes me want to start stocking up on canned food.

This week one of the books I read was Animal Farm. It was an eye opening revelation about human nature and the way animals must view us. As an animal lover, I love that the animals took over the farm and kicked out the farmer. They ran the farms themselves, vowed never to be like humans, and became self-sustaining. Many revolutions start out well meaning but are corrupted by evil people. In this instance it was the pigs. They slowly turned the farm back into what it once was and mistreated the poor animals!

The book is family friendly would be a good read for almost anyone. On the surface it is a funny, light-hearted story about some crazy animals, but, if you really pay attention to the story, it has a much deeper meaning. There is no questionable language and very little violence. The farmer gets drunk, but it is frowned upon by the animals.

Thanks for reading my blog :)
